Andrej Karpathy, one of the most influential voices in the AI industry, played a major role in developing Tesla's self-driving and artificial intelligence systems before exiting the company in 2022.
According to Reuters, Karpathy has now joined Anthropic's pretraining team — the division responsible for large-scale model training that powers Claude's core capabilities and knowledge base. He began work this week and will report within the team led by Nick Joseph, Anthropic's head of pretraining.
Karpathy studied under renowned Stanford AI expert Fei-Fei Li and was among the earliest employees at OpenAI before later moving to Tesla.
John Schulman, another OpenAI co-founder, also joined Anthropic in 2024. OpenAI has witnessed several high-profile exits in recent years, including former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever and former CTO Mira Murati, who now leads AI startup Thinking Machines.
Anthropic is currently facing intense competition from rival frontier AI developers, including OpenAI, as companies race to build the most advanced AI models for cloud computing platforms.
