The sudden disappearance of social media platforms pushed many Nepalis to seek alternative ways of staying connected after the government banned Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and others.

One of the clearest signs of that came from Proton VPN, which saw an extraordinary surge in demand. The Swiss-based service provider said it had recorded a 6,000% increase in sign-ups in Nepal in three days.
