Bangladesh Election Result: Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, a prominent Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader from the minority Hindu community, won the parliamentary seat from Dhaka constituency on Friday.
Roy secured victory in the Dhaka-3 seat with 99,163 votes, defeating his closest competitor, the Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Md Shahinur Islam, as reported by the state-operated BSS news agency.
The 13th parliamentary elections in Bangladesh will succeed the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. The BNP is heading for a substantial victory in the historic parliamentary elections in order to reclaim power after a two-decade hiatus.
Who is Gayeshwar Chandra Roy?
Gayeshwar Chandra Roy is a veteran BNP politician and one of the few Hindu figures within Bangladesh's prominent political arena. Born on November 1, 1951, in Keraniganj, Dhaka, to Gannandra Chandra Roy and Sumoti Roy, he has remained engaged in politics for many years.
He has long been a member of the BNP's Standing Committee, the party's supreme policy-making entity, and previously occupied ministerial positions in BNP-led administrations during the 1990s, including State Minister for Environment & Forests and State Minister for Fisheries & Livestock.
