Google Photos has revealed plans for an AI-driven tool that converts images of your clothing into an interactive digital wardrobe. Users will be able to assemble new outfit combinations and experiment with virtual try-ons.

The feature echoes the now-famous styling system seen in Clueless, in which the lead character, Cher Horowitz, browses her outfits digitally to decide what to wear.

The iconic wardrobe technology seen in the 1995 comedy is now finding echoes in Google's latest ambitions for Google Photos. In the film, the character, Cher, scrolls through her wardrobe on a touchscreen, experimenting with different combinations. A “Dress Me” feature determines compatibility between items and offers a virtual try-on through a digital avatar.

According to Google, the feature relies on AI to build a digital inventory of garments identified in a user's Google Photos collection. Once generated, the wardrobe can be browsed by category, including shirts, trousers and jewellery, making it possible to mix items and create new outfit combinations.

"Create outfits with ease. Mix and match items of clothing to create outfits, then share them with friends or save them on a digital moodboard. You can have separate moodboards for different occasions, e.g., summer weddings, a trip to Italy, work outfits," Google said in a blog post.

Users will also be able to experiment with a 'Try it on' function, designed to give a visual sense of completed outfits. While the tool has yet to go live, Google confirmed it will begin rolling out to Google Photos on Android this summer, before arriving on iOS.

The feature positions Google Photos alongside established wardrobe apps including Acloset, Combyne, Pureple, Whering and Alta.

The company stopped short of explaining the mechanics behind the AI, noting only that it can detect clothing and accessories in stored images to generate individual entries. Although it should work with well-lit, full-body shots, a more reliable outcome would probably come from users capturing dedicated photos of each item, echoing the method popularised in Clueless.
