The Apple iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to arrive in around six months, but rumour mill has been churning non-stop as to the advances they will bring. While the latest A20 Pro chipset and a slightly bigger battery capacity are expected to bring performance and efficiency bumps to the Pros, a notable upshift is expected on the camera front.
New 48MP Camera Sensor Rumoured For iPhone 18 Pro Range
Rumour has it that the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will pack one of the more notable upgrades in optics in recent years. The main among them is a new custom 48MP main camera sensor developed in collaboration with Samsung. This advanced sensor will reportedly use a three-layer stacked design, which is anticipated to improve image capturing and low-light performance compared to previous generations relying on Sony sensors.
There are reports that Apple might even jump from a 48MP sensor to much higher-resolution 200MP one, although this has been disputed by tech insiders and experts. The company might stick with 48MP resolution while making other enhancements.
Variable Aperture — A First For iPhones
Another exciting possibility is variable aperture on the main camera — a first for any iPhone. Unlike the fixed aperture used in earlier iPhones, this system would allow the lens to dynamically adjust its opening rather than relying on a fixed focal length of f/1.78 in current models.
This means photography purists will get greater control over light intake, depth of field, and exposure — sans the over-reliance on software processing and AI enhancements, which are often criticised for making images look “artificial.”
Improved Telephoto
The telephoto in the iPhone 18 Pro line may see some useful upgrades over the past iterations as well. Apple is reportedly working on a “larger aperture,” which might address a common problem that plagues iPhones: low-light performance. A larger or faster aperture can bring improved low-light results when zooming in, making 4x to 8x optical capabilities better.
