Mohammed Shami has continued his good form in domestic cricket as he picked eight wickets against Jammu and Kashmir in the semi-final of the Ranji Trophy. The Bengal pacer bowled a brilliant spell of 8/90 as Jammu and Kashmir were bowled out on 302 in their first innings. The spell is now Shami's best bowling performance in a First Class game.
The 35-year-old has had a fruitful 2025/26 season in Ranji Trophy, having picked 36 wickets in seven matches. He also excelled in the white-ball tournaments as he picked 31 wickets in total across the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy tournaments.
Shami is currently out of favour with the national selectors. He hasn't played an international game since the Champions Trophy final last March.
With a strong performance in the domestic circuit, Shami is making a strong case for himself for a possible return to the national squad. India have plenty of matches to play across formats this year.
Once the team resumes playing post the 2026 Indian Premier League season, they travel to England in June for a white-ball tournament. Later in the year, the team will play Test matches against Sri Lanka and New Zealand.
It will be interesting to see if Shami has convinced selectors enough or have selectors silently pulled the curtains down on his international career. For now Shami continues to grind hard in domestic cricket.
