Chennai Super Kings kept their IPL 2026 playoff fate in their own hands, with a crucial five-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday, May 10. Chasing 204, CSK rode on a stunning assault from Urvil Patel before Shivam Dube and Prashant Veer sealed the chase with four balls to spare in a high-pressure finish.

The contest initially appeared to be slipping away from CSK after LSG exploded in the powerplay through Josh Inglis, who smashed a breathtaking 85 off just 33 deliveries. Lucknow raced to 91/1 in the powerplay and looked set for a mammoth total before Jamie Overton dragged CSK back into the contest with a crucial spell of 3/36.

Despite a late flourish from Shahbaz Ahmed, who remained unbeaten on 43, Chennai managed to restrict LSG to 203/8, a total that still looked imposing at Chepauk, especially since CSK hadn't successfully chased a target of 180 or more since 2018.

But the chase was transformed completely by Urvil Patel. Promoted up the order, the youngster tore into the LSG attack and equalled the fastest fifty in IPL history, reaching the milestone in just 13 balls before eventually falling for a sensational 65 off 23 deliveries.

By the time Urvil departed in the 10th over, the required run rate had fallen to a manageable 7.30. Ruturaj Gaikwad (42 off 28) and Kartik Sharma (20 off 20) then steadied the innings through the middle overs, but a cluster of wickets briefly swung momentum back in LSG's favour.

However, with the equation tightening late in the chase, Dube (15*) and Veer (17*) held their nerve to guide Chennai home and seal the two points.

CSK IPL 2026 Playoff Qualification Scenario

The victory pushes CSK to fifth on the IPL 2026 points table with 12 points from 11 matches, placing them firmly back in the middle of a crowded playoff race. With three teams level on 12 points, net run rate could become decisive over the final week of the league stage.

For Chennai, the qualification equation is relatively straightforward. Two wins from their remaining three matches would take them to the 16-point mark, which has historically been enough to guarantee playoff qualification.

If CSK manage only one more victory and finish on 14 points, their playoff hopes could come down to net run rate and results involving other teams .

Their remaining schedule includes another meeting against Lucknow Super Giants (away), followed by high-pressure fixtures against Sunrisers Hyderabad (home) and Gujarat Titans (away). The clash against GT in Ahmedabad could ultimately become a direct shootout for a playoff place depending on results.

For Lucknow Super Giants, meanwhile, the defeat means they're knocked out of contention for the playoffs. LSG remain rooted to the bottom of the table and can only reach a maximum of 12 points.

Here's a look at how the IPL 2026 points table stands after CSK vs LSG.
