Two persons, including a woman, were killed when a portion of a garbage dump in east Delhi’s Ghazipur landfill site collapsed due to rains on Friday, officials said. Four people have been rescued from under the pile of trash, they said.

A car, a scooter and two motorcycles that were moving on an adjoining road fell into the Kondli canal after they were hit by the falling garbage. A senior police official identified the dead victims as Raj Kumari, 32, and Abhishek, 22. “Four people were rescued,” he said.

Firefighters and 45 personnel from the National Disaster Response Force Rescue were engaged in the rescue operation, a senior NDRF official said.

The landfill site falls under the jurisdiction of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation. East Delhi mayor Neema Bhagat said rain caused the accident. “A portion of that (collapsed garbage mound) then fell into one of the canals close to it and the water splashed on to some moving vehicles throwing them into another flank of the canal,” she said.
