Indian equity benchmarks closed higher on Wednesday, extending gains to a second consecutive trading session. The BSE Sensex ended 1.6% or nearly 1,200 points higher at 75,273 and the NSE Nifty 50 rose as much as 1.7% to 23,306.

The broader markets outperformed the benchmarks with the Nifty Midcap 150 and Nifty Smallcap 250 adding over 2%. More than 2,800 stocks on the BSE ended in green and nearly 1,300 in red.

HDFC Bank and Larsen and Toubro added the most points to the Nifty. Shriram Finance and UltraTech Cements were the top gainers on the blue-chip counter.

All 12 sectoral indices on the NSE ended higher. The Nifty PSU Bank and NSE Realty gained the most.

US Market Wrap

 After US President Donald Trump extended the deadline for Iran to strike a deal, which came after the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100 indexes had closed for trading, lifted futures contracts for the gauges by 0.5%. The markets closed lower on Thursday, with the S&P 500 down 1.74%, while the Nasdaq 100 fell 2.38%.

Asian Market Update

 Asian shares opened lower with losses in South Korea and Japan. Hang Seng futures were little changed, while Japan's Topix fell 0.2%.

Oil prices dropped as Trump again extended the deadline to strike Iran, giving the market near-term relief while prolonging uncertainty over the course of the war. Brent fell nearly 2% to below $106 a barrel after a jump of around  6% on Thursday, and West Texas Intermediate stood at $94, Bloomberg reported.
