Nifty 50 closed 0.2% lower, with State Bank of India and HDFC Bank among the top losers, both falling more than 1.5%.

Broader markets outperformed the benchmarks. The Nifty Midcap 150 gained nearly 0.5%, led by Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services, up over 7.5%, and Gujarat Fluorochemicals, up almost 7%. The Nifty Smallcap 250 also rose nearly 0.5%, with Karur Vysya Bank surging over 13% and Data Patterns India gaining almost 7%.

Sectoral indices ended mixed. Nifty Realty was the top gainer, rising over 1%, led by Prestige Estates Projects and Godrej Properties. Nifty PSU Bank was the top loser, down nearly 1%, with Bank of Baroda and State Bank of India leading declines.

Nifty Metal and Nifty Pharma extended gains for a second session, while Nifty Financial Services, Nifty Bank and Nifty IT fell for a second consecutive day. Nifty FMCG snapped a three-day gaining streak, while Nifty Oil & Gas and Nifty PSU Bank ended their recent winning runs.

• Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 926 crore in Q1, up 75.1% from Rs 529 crore a year earlier. Total income rose 3% quarter-on-quarter to Rs 5,725 crore.
• Calculated net interest income increased 17.9% year-on-year to Rs 2,580 crore, while impairments declined 18.4% to Rs 567 crore. On a sequential basis, net profit was down 1.3% from Rs 938 crore.

• HDFC Bank is in focus after reports said the board has yet to recommend the reappointment of Managing Director and CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan to the RBI, with independent directors undertaking an additional review process.
• Media reports said the board aims to complete the review in the first week of August. Jagdishan’s current tenure is scheduled to end in October. Reports also noted that external legal firms found no substance in allegations raised by the bank’s former chairman and cleared governance-related concerns.
• The stock has fallen about 7% over the last two sessions and is down around 25% from its record high level.

• Italy’s FTSE MIB rose 0.55%, while Spain’s IBEX 35 gained 0.51% and Germany’s DAX advanced 0.11%.

• Adani Energy Solutions reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 1,149 crore in Q1, compared with Rs 513 crore a year earlier. Revenue rose 42.4% year-on-year to Rs 9,711 crore.
• EBITDA increased 30% to Rs 3,008 crore, while the EBITDA margin stood at 31% versus 33.9% a year ago.
• Transmission revenue rose 52% to Rs 3,335 crore, with transmission EBIT increasing 43% to Rs 1,328 crore. Distribution revenue grew 5% to Rs 3,520 crore, while distribution EBIT rose 18% to Rs 357 crore.

• Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes across 14 sectors have attracted investments of Rs 2.4 lakh crore as of March 2026, the government said in a reply in the Lok Sabha.
