Paramount Pictures has officially confirmed that Top Gun 3 is in development, with Tom Cruise set to reprise his iconic role as Lt. Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell. The announcement was made during the studio's presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, as reported by Variety, with veteran producer Jerry Bruckheimer also returning to the franchise.

The third installment follows the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick, directed by Joseph Kosinski. Released in 2022, the film became a global box office phenomenon at a time when theatres were still recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic. Made on a budget of approximately $170 million, it earned nearly $1.5 billion worldwide, significantly boosting the theatrical business.

According to Variety, plans for the third film were first revealed in 2024, with writer Ehren Kruger returning to pen the script. He had previously co-written Maverick alongside Eric Warren Singer and Christopher McQuarrie. While specific plot details are still under wraps, the story is expected to expand on Maverick's journey and the world introduced in the previous film.

In Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise returned to the role 36 years after the original 1986 film. His character, now a seasoned pilot, is tasked with training a new generation of aviators for a dangerous mission. Among them is Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, played by Miles Teller, the son of Maverick's late best friend Nick “Goose” Bradshaw. Together with their team, they complete the high-risk mission.
