India plans to acquire the US-made Javelin anti-tank missile system, a move described by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor as a significant step forward in defence cooperation between the two countries.
Gor announced the development in a post on X on Friday, calling Javelin a “battle-tested” anti-tank system and saying the proposed acquisition could also open the door to co-production opportunities between India and the United States.
“BIG news! India plans to buy the battle-tested Javelin anti-tank system,” Gor said, adding that the move represented progress in the US-India defence relationship. He also highlighted the high level of engagement between the two countries.

The US Embassy in India separately described Javelin as a leading anti-tank system and said its acquisition would further strengthen bilateral defence cooperation.

What Is Javelin?
The Javelin is a US-made, man-portable, fire-and-forget anti-tank missile system designed to engage heavily armoured vehicles and other battlefield targets.
Its fire-and-forget capability allows a soldier to launch the missile and move away from the firing position without having to continue guiding the weapon. This can improve the operator's survivability by reducing the time troops remain exposed to enemy fire.
The system is designed to provide precision against armoured threats while allowing troops to rapidly engage targets and reposition themselves. Its portability also enables infantry units to carry and deploy the weapon in battlefield environments.
