The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heatwave conditions to prevail in eastern states like West Bengal and Odisha from May 9 to May 13. Other regions will experience thunderstorms, lightning and moderate to heavy rainfall, along with strong winds, the weather agency said in its latest bulletin on May 9.

A new heatwave is set to begin over Eastern India on May 10, with conditions likely to persist in isolated pockets of the region. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, along with Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha and Jharkhand, are expected to face intense heat between May 10 and 15. The IMD has issued a heatwave warning for these areas, urging residents to take necessary precautions. The heatwave conditions are expected to be particularly severe in Gangetic West Bengal, with a prolonged spell of hot and humid weather expected to continue until mid-May.
Thunderstorms, Lightning in Uttarakhand, HP and J&K
Thunderstorms, lightning and moderate rainfall have been forecast for the northwestern and central regions of India, starting from May 9. Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are expected to see scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by winds reaching speeds of 40 to 60 km/h. The IMD warns of thundersqualls in Rajasthan on May 9, with wind speeds expected to peak at 50 to 60 km/h, and even going up to 70 km per hour.
AdvertisementIn addition, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan are also likely to experience light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning, with wind speeds reaching 40 to 50 km per hour. Thunderstorms and gusty winds will continue in Rajasthan until May 13, the IMD predicted.
West And South India
Thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are likely to affect West India from May 9 to 11. Gujarat is expected to experience strong thundersqualls on May 9. Similarly, Maharashtra and Gujarat will be under the influence of intense thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds h on May 9.
AdvertisementAmong southern states, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Telangana and Karnataka will experience isolated to scattered rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Winds will be strong, reaching up to 50 km per hour, particularly over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on May 9. The IMD also predicts thundersqualls in Andhra Pradesh on May 9 and 13.
Heavy Rain, Lightning In Northeast India
Northeast India will see widespread to fairly widespread rainfall, with thunderstorms and lightning, from May 10 to 13. The IMD has issued a heavy rainfall warning for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, where isolated very heavy rainfall is expected on May 12 and May 13. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura will also see heavy rainfall during this period.
Hot And Humid Weather In West Bengal And Northeastern States
Apart from the heatwave, the IMD has issued warnings of hot and humid weather across various parts of the country. Gangetic West Bengal will experience hot and humid conditions on May 9, with similar weather expected over Bihar on May 10. Odisha, Kerala, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura will also face hot and humid conditions on May 9 and 10.
