Indian diplomat Vikram K. Doraiswami has been appointed as India's next Ambassador to the People's Republic of China, the Ministry of External Affairs said. Doraiswami, who is presently High Commissioner of India to the United Kingdom, is expected to take up the assignment shortly.
Doraiswami joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1992, following a year-long stint as a journalist. He holds a Master's degree in History from the University of Delhi. After completing his in-service training in New Delhi (1992–1993), he was posted in May 1994 as Third Secretary to the High Commission of India in Hong Kong. During this assignment, he studied Chinese and earned an elective diploma from the Yale‑in‑Asia Language School at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In September 1996, he was posted to the Embassy of India in Beijing, where he served for nearly four years.
Doraiswami returned to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in New Delhi in 2000 and was appointed Deputy Chief of Protocol (Ceremonials). Two years later, he was seconded to the Prime Minister's Office, where he subsequently served as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister of India. In 2006, he was posted to the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York as Political Counsellor. In October 2009, he assumed charge as India's Consul General in Johannesburg, South Africa.
In July 2011, Doraiswami returned to the MEA as Head of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Division. During this period, he also served as Coordinator for the Fourth BRICS Summit held in New Delhi in March 2012. From October 2012 to October 2014, he was Joint Secretary in charge of the Americas Division.
He was appointed Ambassador of India to Uzbekistan in October 2014 and was subsequently assigned as Ambassador to the Republic of Korea in April 2015. Upon completion of this assignment, he returned to MEA headquarters in July 2018 as Head of the Bangladesh and Myanmar Division. In April 2019, he was tasked with establishing the MEA's newly created Indo‑Pacific Division. Following his promotion in December 2019, he served as Additional Secretary responsible for International Organisations and Summits.
Before his posting to the United Kingdom, Doraiswami served as High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh from October 2020 until Sept 18, 2022. He assumed charge as High Commissioner of India to the United Kingdom on Sept 23, 2022.
