The Madhya Pradesh government has removed retired judge Giribala Singh, mother-in-law of deceased actor Twisha Sharma, from her post as Chairperson of the Bhopal District Consumer Commission as the alleged dowry death case snowballs into a major political and institutional controversy.

The order, issued by the state Food Department on Thursday, comes amid mounting scrutiny over Giribala Singh's alleged role in the case.

The government has also initiated formal proceedings against her following the registration of an FIR at Katara Hills Police Station in Bhopal in connection with the case.

According to an official communication dated May 20, 2026, the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department has directed the Registrar of the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission to conduct an urgent inquiry against Giribala Singh under Rule 9(2) of the 2020 regulations.

The FIR includes provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to dowry death, cruelty, and common intention, along with charges under the Dowry Prohibition Act for allegedly demanding and accepting dowry.

Twisha Sharma was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 15, just five months after marrying advocate Samarth Singh in December 2025.

The couple had reportedly met through a dating application in 2024. Twisha's family has accused her husband and in-laws of subjecting her to dowry harassment.

The case has sparked widespread outrage in Madhya Pradesh due to the prominence of the accused family and allegations from Twisha's relatives that the investigation and postmortem process were influenced.

A plea seeking a second postmortem examination at AIIMS Delhi was rejected by a Bhopal court on Wednesday.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has said the state government will request a CBI probe into the matter, while Bhopal Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar maintained that the investigation so far points towards suicide rather than murder.
