A social media post claiming that ‘feels-like' temperatures in Thane crossed 60°C has gone viral. The tweet stated that oppressive weather conditions had caused apparent temperatures in sections of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to climb sharply.
According to the post on X, Thane touched 62°C, while Navi Mumbai recorded 53°C and Chembur 55.7°C.
The post, in no time, created a lot of buzz with several users voicing anxiety about the intensifying weather conditions in Mumbai and nearby areas. A number of people also mistakenly believed the figures represented the city's actual recorded temperatures.
In a subsequent tweet, the account clarified, “Above mentioned temperatures are feels like temperatures which are different than actual temperatures. These are calculated along with intensity of humidity & wet bulb temperatures taken through the devices from Ambient Weather.”
The initial post sparked several reactions. One user wrote, “Impossible, it's 60 unless you have created a glasshouse and heated it to make it 60.”
“The person who measured Thane temperature must be cooking biryani in a kitchen without any ventilation, exhaust fan,” remarked another user.
“Why call it weather, it should be regarded as a microwave oven," said an account.
In an attempt to reassure worried residents, the Mumbai Rains account later stated that weather conditions were likely to improve from Tuesday onwards. It also hinted at possible showers in Mumbai next week, which could bring temporary relief from the intense heat and humidity.
