The holy month of Ramadan, or Ramzan, started in India on Feb. 19 after the sighting of the crescent moon. It is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and is observed by millions of Muslims in the country.
Ramadan is a sacred period of fasting, prayer and reflection. During this time, fasting is observed from dawn to dusk and is considered one of the five pillars of Islam.
In some countries like Saudi Arabia, Ramadan started a day earlier on Feb. 18. Since the holy month of Ramadan symbolises discipline and gratitude, Muslims avoid eating and drinking, including water, from dawn until sunset.
Usually, the day starts with Sehri, the pre-dawn meal, and comes to an end in the evening with Iftar. This spiritual journey provides Muslims with an opportunity to observe fast and offer prayers to God. Besides this, they also look forward to engaging themselves in various charitable acts.
Sehri offers nourishment and strength for the day ahead, while Iftar is the time for joy and starts with dates and water. Also, this is the time when they look forward to spending time with their family and friends.
For fasting, precise timings are followed during Ramadan. This can vary slightly from one location to another.
