Prior Hospitalisation and Health Concerns

Prateek had reportedly been unwell for some time. A few weeks ago, he was admitted to Medanta Hospital in Lucknow, during which Akhilesh Yadav had also visited him. After showing some improvement, he was brought back home.

The circumstances surrounding his death early Wednesday morning, however, remain under investigation pending the postmortem report.

The exact cause of death has not yet been disclosed, and officials have confirmed that a post-mortem is currently being conducted.

The final cause of death will be established only once the medical report is released.

Who Was Prateek Yadav?

Prateek Yadav was the son of Mulayam Singh Yadav's second wife, Sadhna Yadav and stepbrother of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav. Unlike his brother, Prateek always stayed away from active politics. He was primarily involved in business and was known for his high-profile lifestyle, drawing considerable attention for his collection of luxury cars.

Prateek studied at the University of Leeds and was associated with real estate and fitness businesses.

He ran a gym called 'The Fitness Planet' in Lucknow and was also involved in animal welfare through an organisation named 'Jeev Ashray', which worked for the rescue and care of stray dogs.

Aparna Yadav married Prateek in 2012, and the couple have two daughters together. His wife Aparna Yadav is currently the vice-chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Women's Commission and is associated with the BJP.

A Troubled Personal Life

In January 2026, Prateek had, reportedly, taken to Instagram to announce that he was seeking a divorce from Aparna Yadav, calling her a "selfish woman" and accusing her of "destroying" his family. The post was deleted later.

The announcement had drawn widespread attention given the high-profile political profile of both individuals. The couple had been together since their school days and were in a relationship for nearly a decade before marrying in 2012.

In February, he participated in a rally in Lucknow advocating for street dogs and urging the Supreme Court to avoid making “inhumane decisions” after it directed the removal of stray dogs from public spaces like schools and hospitals.
