Mumbai will soon get a world-class integrated Metro Car Depot in Mogharpada. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has taken possession of 174.01 hectares of land in Thane district for the Mumbai Metro project.
Strategically located, the depot will serve as the central operations and maintenance hub for Metro Lines 4, 4A, 10, and 11, covering a 55.99 km network from CSMT to Mira Road, MMRDA said in a post on X on Monday.

June 16, 2025“The Mogharpada metro depot stands as a cornerstone in Mumbai's journey toward a more connected and commuter-centric future. As the central hub for Metro Lines 4, 4A, 10, and 11, this facility will ensure seamless, reliable service across some of the city's most rapidly growing corridors,” Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.
AdvertisementThe upcoming Mogharpada Metro Depot will be Mumbai Metro's largest depot. It will offer key facilities to support efficient metro operations in the region. MMRDA has planned 10 workshop lines for heavy maintenance and 10 inspection lines for daily checks. Moreover, the depot will include an under-floor wheel lathe for wheel profiling and automated heavy wash systems for cleaning trains regularly.
It will have a blow-down plant that removes dust from the underframe and roof equipment. Additionally, the CMV workshop will handle maintenance of catenary vehicles. The Depot Control Centre will manage operations and training. For round-the-clock functioning of the depot, staff quarters will be provided for essential personnel.
AdvertisementOnce operational, Metro Lines 4 and 4A will significantly enhance the travel experience for Mumbaikars and the people of nearby areas. The lines will cut current travel times by up to 50% and serve nearly 12 lakh passengers daily, MMRDA said.
These lines will connect previously underserved areas, improving accessibility across the city. They are also expected to ease traffic congestion.
Additionally, the new metro lines are expected to drive development and economic growth in the Eastern Suburbs and Thane region, according to MMRDA.
The work on the depot is set to begin immediately, with a contract worth Rs 905 crore awarded to SEW–VSE JV for construction.
