The South Central Railway has introduced a new digital service called the Rail Parcel App to make parcel delivery through Indian Railways faster and easier. The app was officially launched on Wednesday, Feb. 25, with Hyderabad becoming the first division to roll out the pilot project.

The Rail Parcel App has been launched at seven locations across the South Central Railway zone. These include Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Guntur, Rajahmundry, Visakhapatnam, Bengaluru, and Chennai. According to a report by The Hindu, the app was launched by Sanjay Kumar Srivastava, General Manager of South Central Railway.

“The new platform is designed to provide an end-to-end parcel service, covering doorstep pickup, doorstep delivery, real-time tracking of parcels, automated push notifications, and digital payment options,”  Srivastava was quoted as saying by The Hindu.

He added that parcel booking should be “as easy as booking a taxi,” and said the Rail Parcel App has made this possible. South Central Railway also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. The agreement is for conducting a detailed study on the freight logistics market within the SCR zone.

Under this partnership, IIM Bangalore, through its Centre of Excellence in Supply Chain Management (SCMC), will take up structured demand forecasting, analysis of competitiveness between different transport modes, consultations with industry stakeholders, field surveys, and assessments of infrastructure gaps. The institute will also prepare a strategic roadmap aimed at unlocking freight growth potential and strengthening rail-based logistics.

According to railway officials quoted by The Hindu, the study will support Indian Railways' objective of achieving “Mission 3000 Million Tonnes of Freight Loading by 2030.”

As reported by the website, one of the major features of the app is its “door-to-door booking and delivery” facility. Users can book rail parcel transport directly through the platform and arrange pickup and delivery from locations specified by them.

While in other cases, customers must physically visit the railway parcel office near major railway stations.

Does It Offer A Tracking Facility ?

The app offers “end-to-end tracking” of consignments, enabling customers to monitor their parcels in real time as they move through different stages of transportation, the website reported. In addition, it provides “automated alerts,” which keep users updated on changes in parcel status and help improve communication and visibility throughout the shipment cycle.
