Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will travel to Canada and the United States from August 25 to September 2, with bilateral economic ties, investment opportunities and global financial cooperation high on the agenda, the Ministry of Finance said on Monday.

A key part of her Canada visit will be the inaugural Economic and Financial Dialogue between India and Canada in Toronto. Sitharaman will participate in the dialogue with Canadian Minister of Finance and National Revenue François-Philippe Champagne.

The talks are expected to cover macroeconomic developments, financial-sector cooperation, bilateral investment opportunities and shared global economic priorities. The two sides are also looking at cooperation in areas including energy, critical minerals, technology, innovation and resilient supply chains, alongside ongoing efforts towards a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

Sitharaman will also take part in an investment roundtable with senior executives from the energy, artificial intelligence and critical minerals sectors. The discussions will focus on business-to-business linkages, investment opportunities and long-term commercial partnerships, including opportunities in GIFT City-IFSC.

The finance minister is also scheduled to participate in a business roundtable with Canadian business leaders, where financial-sector cooperation and investment opportunities will be discussed. Senior managing directors and CEOs of Indian public sector banks will also participate.

She will hold one-on-one meetings with Canadian company executives, with discussions expected to focus on India's growth prospects and opportunities for Canadian businesses to expand their presence in India.

During her Toronto visit, Sitharaman will also interact with the Indian community.

The US leg of the visit will take her to Chicago, Asheville and New York between August 28 and September 2.

In Chicago, Sitharaman will meet investors and senior private-sector executives at roundtables and hold one-on-one meetings with company leaders. She will also visit the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Chicago to discuss entrepreneurship, technology commercialisation and India's startup ecosystem.

The minister will then travel to Asheville, North Carolina, where she will lead India's delegation at the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) meeting on August 31 and September 1 under the US G20 presidency.

The meeting will focus on global economic growth and stability, international financial cooperation and other issues affecting both emerging and advanced economies.

Sitharaman will conclude the US visit in New York, where she is scheduled to participate in an investor roundtable and meet senior executives from the financial sector.

She will also attend a bell-ringing ceremony at Nasdaq, which the Finance Ministry described as an opportunity to gain insights into technology-driven financial markets and the evolving relationship between technology and capital markets.
