Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced that over 30% of the targeted 10 lakh people had been evacuated to safety by Wednesday evening as cyclone Dana approached the state's coastal region, posing a threat to nearly half of its population.

The government set a goal to evacuate 10,60,336 individuals from 14 districts. Evacuees are being provided with dry and cooked food, along with necessary arrangements in cyclone shelters. The chief minister assured that the state government is fully prepared to handle the situation and urged residents to stay safe and avoid panic.

Public transportation to and from Kolkata's suburbs may be disrupted starting Thursday evening as Eastern and South Eastern Railways have cancelled numerous trains due to the approaching cyclone.

Over 170 express and passenger trains under the jurisdiction of South Eastern Railway have been cancelled, with departures scheduled till Oct 27. The SER zone, headquartered in Kolkata, covers West Bengal, Odisha, and Jharkhand.

Additionally, the Eastern Railway will suspend all EMU local train services from Sealdah station on its south and Hasnabad sections from 8:00 p.m. on Thursday until 10:00 a.m. on Friday. The Eastern Railway also cancelled 68 suburban trains on the Howrah division for Friday morning.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi held a meeting with top state officials to review preparedness for cyclone Dana. All departments have been directed to hold detailed discussions with the Revenue Minister, Chief Secretary, Special Relief Commissioner and District Collectors of the 11 districts to be affected and take precautionary measures after analyzing the current situation of the storm.

"Around 3 lakh people have been shifted to safer places in the affected areas. A control room at the Special Relief Commissioner's office is functioning 24 hours a day and monitoring the situation," he said.

  • Odisha: Anugul, Baleshwar, Bauda, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Gajapati, Ganjam, Jagatsinghapur, Jajapur, Kandhamal, Kendujhar, Khordha, Mayurbhanj, Nayagarh, and Puri districts.

Normal life in Odisha's capital Bhubaneswar was disrupted on Thursday as Cyclone Dana approached the coast. Many residents stayed indoors, resulting in low vehicular traffic.

The city's airport suspended flights from 5 p.m. on Oct. 24 to 9 a.m. on Oct. 25, affecting 40 domestic and international flights.

Educational institutions were shut from Oct. 23 to 25, while government offices, banks, and businesses remained open with minimal crowds.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said that the administration identified over 3.5 lakh people to be evacuated from low-lying areas of the state in the wake of the approaching cyclone Dana.

Urging people to take precautionary measures and cooperate with the administration and the police, she said 2,43,374 people have taken shelter in camps.

"For the purpose of evacuation from low-lying areas, we have identified 3,56,941 people," she told reporters at the state secretariat.

The severe cyclonic storm Dana over the northwest Bay of Bengal moved north-northwest at a speed of 13 kmph in the last six hours, centering at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 24 near latitude 19.8° N and longitude 87.5°E. It was positioned about 100 km east-southeast of Paradip, 130 km south-southeast of Dhamara, and 210 km south-southwest of Sagar Island in West Bengal, according to the latest IMD data.

The storm is likely to cross between Odisha's Puri and West Bengal's Sagar Island, near Bhitarkanika and Dhamara, between midnight of Oct. 24 and the morning of Oct. 25, with wind speeds of 100-110 kmph, gusting to 120 kmph.

The landfall process of a severe cyclonic storm Dana has commenced, IMD said in its latest bulletin. It is currently located approximately 50 km east-northeast of Paradip in Odisha, 40 km south-southeast of Dhamara, and 160 km southwest of Sagar Island of West Bengal.

The storm is expected to move north-northwest and cross the north Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Island, close to Bhitarkanika and Dhamara (Odisha), over the next three-to-four hours, IMD said, adding that the forward sector of the wall cloud region has begun entering land, and the landfall process will continue through the morning of Friday.
