US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Monday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump after both leaders confirmed the India-US trade deal. Washington has reduced tariffs on Indian goods from 25% to 18% under the crucial trade deal.

This is one of the lowest tariffs the United States has announced for major export economies. Speaking to NDTV, Gor said the deal was possible because of the strong friendship between the two nations. He said the US-India relationship has “limitless potential” and that the agreement opens a new chapter in ties between the two countries. He also confirmed that the final total tariff now stands at 18%, down from 50% imposed last year.

Sergio Gor, 38, became the US ambassador to India just a month ago. Even in such a short time, he has quickly emerged as a key figure in reshaping US - India relations under President Trump.
When Trump announced Gor's appointment as US ambassador to India, he said “for the most populous region in the world, it is important that I have someone I can fully trust to deliver on my agenda,” NYT reported.

Who Is Sergio Gor?

Before he was appointed ambassador to India, Gor served as Director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office, where he oversaw thousands of federal appointments. In that role, Gor was known for enforcing strict “loyalty checks” aligned with Trump's political agenda.

Gor further advanced his political career as Deputy Chief of Staff, Foreign Policy Advisor, and Senior Political Aide to Senator Rand Paul. Gor gained national attention in 2020 after leaving Senator Paul's office to become Chief of Staff of the Trump Victory Finance Committee. He also served as CEO of Winning Team Publishing, one of the US' premier conservative publishing houses, which published President Donald J. Trump's best-selling books.

Gor's close ties to the Trump family earned him the nickname ‘Mayor of Mar-a-Lago,' a reference to Trump's Florida resort. A George Washington University graduate, Gor earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and International Affairs in 2008 and speaks three languages fluently: Maltese, Spanish and Russian.
