Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday presented the Union Budget 2026-27, highlighting a range of reforms and policy initiatives to spur growth across sectors. With the Budget 2026 presentation, Nirmala Sitharaman created a new record by becoming the only Finance Minister to deliver nine consecutive Budgets.

In her speech, Sitharaman emphasised on the government's focus on structural reforms and self-reliance. "Keeping 'Atmanirbharta,' as a lodestar, we have built domestic manufacturing capacity, energy security and reduced critical import dependencies. Simultaneously, we have ensured that citizens benefit from every action of the government, undertaking reforms to support employment generation, agricultural productivity, household purchasing power and universal services to people," she said.

The first is to accelerate and sustain economic growth by improving productivity and competitiveness across sectors. The second is to fulfil citizens' aspirations and build their capacity, making people active partners in India's journey towards prosperity. The third aligns with the vision of "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikaas", ensuring that every family, community, region and sector has access to resources and opportunities for meaningful participation.

With a focus on these objectives, one of the major announcements made by the FM involved increasing the outlay for electronic manufacturing to Rs 40,000 crore in the FY27 budget. She also announced support for mineral-rich states — Odisha, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu — to establish facilities for critical minerals. The FM also proposed increasing the capex to Rs 12.2 lakh crore in FY27.

Additionally, Sitharaman proposed setting up three dedicated chemical parks to boost domestic production and reduce import dependence. She highlighted a renewed focus on the Semiconductor Mission 2.0 to strengthen India's chip manufacturing capabilities. The budget for FY27 also includes targeted interventions across six key sectors, including healthcare and manufacturing.

Prior to the Budget, Sitharaman was spotted with the digital tablet, containing the Budget 2026 document, enclosed in a traditional red 'bahi-khata' style pouch. Subsequently, she was seen leaving the Finance Ministry to reach the Lok Sabha for her presentation.

Ahead of the Union Budget 2026 presentation, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also met President Droupadi Murmu and took part in the traditional ‘dahi-cheeni' ritual.
