Uber is set to significantly expand its technology footprint in India, with chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi announcing plans to launch two new tech centres — in Bengaluru and Hyderabad — by the end of 2027.

Khosrowshahi made the announcement at a townhall at the company's Bengaluru office on Thursday, as part of a broader India visit that has seen him cement a series of high-profile commitments to the country.

The Bengaluru facility will have a seating capacity of 5,000 employees across 1.1 million square feet, making it one of the largest tech campuses the company operates outside the United States, reports suggest. The Hyderabad centre will accommodate 4,600 employees in a 901,115 square-foot space.

The announcement follows Khosrowshahi's visit to the company's Hyderabad office on Wednesday and a meeting with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi earlier in the week.

It also comes just a day after he revealed a partnership with the Adani Group to establish Uber's first data centre in India — a facility expected to go live later this year to support the company's global technology operations.

Beyond infrastructure, Khosrowshahi used the townhall to lay out Uber's strategic priorities in India, with the two-wheeler market emerging as a key theme, The Economic Times reported citing sources familiar with the matter.

"Two-wheelers remain an important category for us in India. We are no longer behind in the two-wheeler market. Two years ago, we were not even discussing this category, and now it has become a key market," he said.

Despite regulatory hurdles, two-wheelers are now among the fastest-growing segments in Uber India's portfolio. Last December, Uber launched a business-to-business logistics network on the Open Network for Digital Commerce platform, further deepening its presence in the segment.

On the question of fuel prices and their potential impact on the business amid the ongoing West Asia conflict, Khosrowshahi struck a reassuring note. "In the US, there could be some impact on margins, but not in India yet," he said.

The announcements underscore the scale of Uber's India ambitions at a moment of heightened competition. In February, the company infused approximately $330 million into its Indian unit as rival Rapido continued to expand its operations aggressively across the country.
