A Hyderabad resident recently found bugs in the chicken biryani he had ordered from a popular eatery through food delivery app, Swiggy.
The resident, Sai Teja, shared his woes on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He said he had ordered the biryani from Mehfil Biryani in Kukatpally and paid Rs 318 for the meal. He shared pictures of the dish, which appeared to have a maggot.
He also posted screenshots of his conversation with Swiggy's customer care. Initially, Swiggy offered him only Rs 64 as a refund. "The packaging of dishes is handled solely by the restaurant. However, since you are a valued customer of ours, we'd like to compensate you for your unsatisfactory experience. As a token of apology, we can offer you a refund of Rs 64 for the affected item," a customer executive told him.
Expressing his dissatisfaction with the partial refund, Teja tweeted: "Please stop ordering from Mehfil Kukatpally." His post quickly went viral, drawing attention to the issue.
In response to the viral post, Swiggy Cares commented, "That's certainly not the kind of experience we had in store for you, Sai. Please allow us some time." Later, another customer care executive from Swiggy, Prasad, contacted Teja, offering a full refund and urging him to file a complaint with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
Teja confirmed the resolution in a follow-up tweet, "Prasad from @Swiggy called me and initiated a full amount refund and gave me FSSAI details to file a complaint." He also shared a screenshot of the complaint filed with FSSAI.
In the past few weeks, social media has seen reports of a severed finger in ice cream and a dead mouse in a bottle of Hershey's chocolate syrup, both ordered via food delivery services.
