All private and public sector banks in India follow the Reserve Bank of India’s holiday calendar to decide their closure dates. A bank holiday is a public holiday during which banks and financial institutions are closed for business.
As per the RBI holiday calendar, banks are closed on all National holidays and regional holidays, depending upon the location of the branch. Typically, banks in India are closed on all Sundays and two Saturdays of a month unless specified otherwise.
Knowing if your bank is open or closed on a particular Saturday is important as many people wait for the day to plan their visit to the branches for official work.
The third Saturday of the month is approaching soon. What does this mean for banks? Are they open or closed? Let’s find out.
Are Banks Open or Closed Today?
Banks are generally open on the first, third, and fifth (if applicable) Saturdays of the month unless specified otherwise by the RBI or state governments. Since Jan. 18 is the third Saturday of the month, banks across India will remain open on this day.
This means that people who need to complete important banking tasks on Jan. 18 can visit their branch to do so.
RBI guidelines mandate banks to be closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month.
As per the RBI bank holiday calendar, bank holidays are classified into three prominent categories These are: Holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Real Time Gross Settlement Holidays, and Banks' Closing of Accounts.
The Reserve Bank generally issues its holiday calendar at the beginning of the year, which is shared on its official website.
It is important to note that on bank holidays, activities requiring a physical visit to a branch, such as dropping off a cheque or signing documents, are suspended. However, services like ATM transactions, UPI payments, and net banking will remain available as usual.
You may refer to RBI’s bank holiday calendar for 2025 to plan your bank-related work. Further, you may also contact your nearest bank branch to confirm the days of closure.
