Sun TV Joins The View-On-Demand Video Platform; Stock Gains

Sun TV becomes the fifth Indian production house to launch such services

Sun TV Network Ltd., became the fifth production company in India to launch subscription-based video-on-demand (VoD) service in the country. The Maran-family promoted group which has a bouquet of channels, mostly in South Indian languages, launched Sun NXT. The VoD service lets subscribers watch popular television programmes in four different languages. More than 1.1 million accounts have been activated within four days from its launch on Monday, said the company in a stock exchange filing on Friday. The Sun TV stock rose by after 2 percent intraday, after the announcement came in, to close at Rs 839.

This is the quickest path to the first million among its peers in this category. Momentum is strong and accelerating and all signs point towards the next milestone of over 2 million downloads.
Sun TV’s Filing With Stock Exchanges

Sun NXT has three subscription plans right now:

  • Monthly plan — Rs 50 for 30 days
  • Quarterly plan — Rs 130 for 90 days
  • Annual plan — Rs 495 for 365 days

The first 30 days are free post which subscription charges will be applicable, just like Netflix, or Star’s Hotstar. Both services are available globally via android and Apple app store.

It will offer over 4000 movies and over 40 channels streaming Live TV, movies, kids shows, news, comedy clips and music. It will compete with the likes of Star India’s Hotstar, Zee Entertainment Ltd.’s OZEE, Balaji Telefilms Ltd.’s ALT Balaji, and Viacom18’s Voot.
