SpiceJet announces super sale with Rs 1 base fare

In a big bonanza for domestic air travellers, SpiceJet has sparked off yet another fare war by announcing base fares starting from Rs 1. The offer is valid for tickets booked between April 1-3 and travel between July 1, 2014, and March 28, 2015, on domestic flights.

According to SpiceJet, the base fare excludes fees and other taxes.

It was not possible to ascertain the exact fares as SpiceJet website was down due to "heavy traffic".

This is the fifth time this year that SpiceJet has slashed ticket prices in a bid to gain more passengers and improve its passenger load factor - a measure of how many of an airline's seats are being used.

"We have received overwhelming response to our previous offers and I am confident this sale too will attract many new flyers," SpiceJet chief operating officer Sanjiv Kapoor said.

Stating that the airline's move to offer low fares at different point of time in the last quarter received overwhelming response from the customers, Kapoor said, "Our market stimulation efforts have had a significant positive impact on the entire travel ecosystem at a time when the economy has slowed."

SpiceJet, which posted a Rs 171 crore loss in the December quarter, was the first carrier to slash fares immediately after the end of peak winters holiday season last year, forcing other carriers including Air India and Jet Airways to follow suit.

SpiceJet also announced more flights between Delhi-Kolkata, Hyderabad-Mumbai, Kolkata-Hyderabad, Chennai-Kolkata and Mumbai-Kolkata.

The budget carrier also announced new same-day return options on many routes.

SpiceJet shares were up 1.7 per cent at Rs 14.4 in afternoon trade, outperforming the broader markets that were flat. (With agency inputs)
