Amid rising regional conflict, the United States warned its citizens in 12 Middle Eastern nations to prepare for travel disruptions, including sudden airspace closures and canceled flights.
The security alerts apply to 12 locations including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Jordan, Bahrain, Oman, Iran, Qatar, Iraq, Lebanon, Yemen, and Israel/Jerusalem. The warnings, issued on October 18, 2026, emphasise risks of escalating conflict and potential threats targeting US citizens, assets, businesses, and organisations across the region.
US diplomatic missions have urged Americans to remain vigilant as the evolving security situation could affect commercial aviation and disrupt travel plans at short notice. Travellers have been advised to monitor airline operations, check flight schedules directly with airlines and airports, and remain prepared for last-minute changes.
The security notices also highlight the risk of attacks by Iran and groups aligned with Tehran. Particular concerns include activities by Iran-backed Houthi forces, which have targeted critical infrastructure and civilian airports in Saudi Arabia. Such threats could further complicate regional air travel and increase uncertainty for passengers travelling through affected areas.
US authorities have advised citizens to avoid demonstrations, large gatherings and other potentially unsafe situations. Americans have also been urged to follow instructions issued by local authorities, monitor local news and official government updates, and exercise heightened caution while moving around the region.

The State Department has encouraged US citizens to enrol in its Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), which provides security updates and helps American diplomatic missions contact travellers during emergencies. Officials have also stressed the importance of maintaining flexible travel arrangements and staying informed about developments that could affect personal safety or transport services.
Meanwhile, the US missions in Iraq and Lebanon have indicated that routine services for American citizens remain available. However, the advisory concerning Yemen underscores the limitations on the US government's ability to provide emergency assistance in the country.
Escalating tensions across the region, driven by recent attacks on civilian sites during ongoing Middle East strikes, have prompted security alerts that impact diplomatic operations and international travel.
However, the warnings do not mean that all airports across the 12 locations are closed or that all commercial flights have been cancelled. Flight operations may vary by country, airport and airline, depending on local conditions and security assessments.

American citizens and other travellers planning journeys through the region should therefore verify their individual flight status, consult official travel advisories and follow guidance from local authorities before departing.
