Five people were killed and 19 others injured after a Russian drone strike hit a market in the frontline Ukrainian city of Nikopol on Saturday morning, Ukraine's prosecutor general's office said.

“This is yet another war crime committed by the Russian Federation,” the prosecutor's office said on Telegram.

Reuters reported that Nikopol, located along the Dnipro River and facing Russian-occupied territory just kilometres away, has remained a frequent target of bombardment.

In a separate development, authorities in Russia reported casualties following retaliatory attacks. One person was killed and four others were seriously wounded in the southern Rostov region, according to Governor Yuri Slyusar.

The attack occurred in the port city of Taganrog, where a drone strike hit critical areas. Slyusar said a missile also struck a “commercial facility,” while falling drone debris ignited a fire on a foreign-flagged cargo vessel in the Sea of Azov.

Air defence systems reportedly intercepted additional drones over Taganrog Bay and surrounding districts, though officials did not specify the origin of the attack.

The escalation comes amid continued cross-border strikes, with Kyiv regularly targeting Russian territory in response to Moscow's sustained offensive since February 2022. A day earlier, Russian daytime strikes reportedly killed 14 people across Ukraine.

Among those incidents was an attack on Korosten in the Zhytomyr region, where up to 200 homes were damaged and one person was killed, according to local officials.
