Under Secretary of State Sarah B. Rogers has heaped praise on social media platform X on Wednesday for its new policy that penalises the undisclosed sharing of AI-generated war videos.
“You don't need a Ministry of Truth to incentivise truth online,” Rogers wrote in a post on X.
Rogers shared her remarks while reposting a policy update from X's head of product, Nikita Bier. She noted that the new rules serve as a "great complement" to the platform's Community Notes system, which naturally reduces the reach and monetisation of content flagged as inaccurate by users.
The commendation comes just hours after X announced a revision to its Creator Revenue Sharing policies, designed to prevent the financial manipulation of the program and maintain the authenticity of information during global conflicts.
According to Bier, users who post AI-generated videos depicting armed conflict without explicitly disclosing the use of artificial intelligence will now be suspended from the revenue-sharing program for 90 days. Repeat offenders will face a permanent ban from monetisation.
“During times of war, it is critical that people have access to authentic information on the ground,” Bier wrote, adding that modern AI technologies make it dangerously trivial to create misleading content.
To enforce the new policy, X will utilise its community-driven moderation tool, Community Notes, alongside metadata and other digital signals embedded by generative AI tools, to flag unannotated synthetic media.
The updated policy reflects an increasing effort by social media companies to curb the spread of highly realistic, computer-generated misinformation. Bier emphasised that X will continue to refine its products and policies to ensure the platform remains a trusted source of information during critical global moments.
