Services offered by OpenAI, including ChatGPT and Codex, faced a sudden outage, leaving users in India and the United States unable to access the platforms and disrupting workflows across both regions.
In a statement on its status page, the company said, “Users unable to load ChatGPT and Codex. We are investigating the issue for the listed services.” It added that users of ChatGPT Business may encounter issues after upgrading or adding new seats for up to an hour. “We have applied the mitigation and are monitoring the recovery,” the company noted.
According to outage-tracking platform Downdetector, more than 2,373 incidents were reported across the two countries. The US accounted for 1,617 complaints, while India logged 756 reports, together making up the bulk of the disruption.
The outage was not limited to a single feature. Users reported problems across ChatGPT, Codex, the mobile application, and even login access, suggesting a broader system-wide issue. The disruption appeared quickly and impacted both web and mobile users, with many encountering error messages and failed responses while attempting routine tasks such as writing, coding, and general queries.

This marks the second such incident in recent days, raising fresh concerns about the platform's reliability as its user base continues to expand rapidly.
Frustrated users took to X to confirm whether the services were down and to share their reactions. “Have final projects to work on but my good friend ChatGPT is down,” wrote Brandon McClain in a post. Others echoed similar concerns, with one user remarking, “Of course ChatGPT picks the worst time to go down,” while another said, “ChatGPT and Codex both down at once? There goes my entire workflow.”
Some users also took a swipe at Sam Altman, highlighting the growing dependence on AI tools for everyday productivity. Social media platforms were soon flooded with memes, complaints, and commentary as users reacted in real time to the outage.
While OpenAI has said mitigation measures have been applied, it continues to monitor recovery, with users awaiting full restoration of services.
