Mumbai Indians turned to Jasprit Bumrah for leadership duties for the first time in his 13th season with the franchise, during their clash against Punjab Kings in Dharamshala on Thursday.
The 32-year-old pacer becomes only the 10th player to captain MI, marking a personal milestone with his first-ever appearance as captain in the tournament.
The development came after Hardik Pandya missed the game due to a back spasm. Mumbai were also without Suryakumar Yadav, who had previously captained the side in Hardik's absence but did not travel to Dharamshala due to personal reasons.
The match itself has little consequence for Mumbai Indians, who were eliminated from the IPL 2026 playoff race following their defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru earlier this week. Punjab Kings, meanwhile, entered the contest under pressure after slipping to four consecutive defeats in the race for the playoffs.

Since breaking into the Mumbai Indians setup in 2013, Bumrah has gone on to become one of the franchise's most important players, playing a key role in all five IPL title victories.
The pacer from Baroda has represented MI in 156 IPL games and taken 186 wickets while maintaining an economy of 7.33.
Although this was his first opportunity to lead Mumbai Indians, Bumrah is no stranger to captaincy at the international level. He captained India in the 2022 Birmingham Test against England and later led the side in two Tests during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
At the toss, Bumrah won the call and opted to bowl first, citing the cold evening conditions in Dharamshala and the possibility of the pitch settling down later in the match.
Speaking on his first opportunity to captain Mumbai Indians, Bumrah said the moment felt special after joining the franchise as a teenager in 2013. "I came here as a 19-year-old. I didn't think I'd become a Test captain before captaining Mumbai Indians," Bumrah said at the toss.
The MI stand-in skipper also insisted the team was not looking to simply move on from a difficult campaign, adding that Mumbai still wanted to finish strongly and “ruffle a few teams” in their remaining matches.
