December 12, 2024Gukesh is the second Indian to secure the World Chess Championship title, achieving the milestone over a decade after Viswanathan Anand, a five-time champion, lost the crown to Norway's Magnus Carlsen in Chennai in 2013. Carlsen relinquished the title in 2023, allowing Ding Liren to defeat Ian Nepomniachtchi and claim the championship.
After 13 games spread over three weeks, Ding anticipated rapid and blitz tiebreakers. He had successfully countered Gukesh's aggressive strategies and steered the match towards a seemingly drawish position.
