Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli has his first opportunity to become Formula 1's youngest-ever world champion at the United States Grand Prix in Austin on October 25.
However, the Italian will need a specific combination of results to clinch the 2026 Drivers' Championship with five races remaining in the season.
Antonelli extended his lead at the top of the standings to 102 points after finishing third at the Singapore Grand Prix. His Mercedes teammate George Russell is second, while Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton is third.
Six races remain in the season, with a maximum of 150 points available. After the Austin race, however, only 125 points will remain across the final five rounds in Mexico, Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
F1 2026 Drivers' Championship Standings
The following are the standings after the Singapore Grand Prix:
How Kimi Antonelli Can Win The F1 Title In Austin
Antonelli needs to extend his championship lead by at least 23 points over Russell at the United States Grand Prix to clinch the title. He must win the race and hope his closest challengers fail to score enough points to keep the championship open.
The permutations for Antonelli to become world champion in Austin are:
Kimi Antonelli: Must win the United States Grand Prix and score 25 points.
George Russell: Must finish ninth or lower, scoring two points or fewer.
Lewis Hamilton: Must finish fifth or lower, scoring 10 points or fewer.
All three conditions must be met for Antonelli to clinch the championship in Austin.
If Antonelli wins and Russell finishes ninth, the Mercedes teammates will be separated by 125 points, with exactly 125 points remaining across the final five races. Antonelli would still secure the title on a countback, provided Hamilton also finishes outside the top four.
An Austin victory would be Antonelli's ninth of the season. Russell, who has three wins, could win a maximum of five more races, taking his season total to eight. Antonelli would therefore retain the advantage on race wins, the first tiebreaker if drivers finish level on points.
Can Hamilton, Verstappen, Leclerc And Norris Still Win The Title?
Hamilton remains mathematically in contention, trailing Antonelli by 111 points. However, the Ferrari driver must finish fifth or lower in Austin for Antonelli to have a chance of securing the championship that weekend.
Verstappen, who is 119 points behind Antonelli, Leclerc, who trails by 125 points, and Norris, who is 139 points behind, are also still mathematically in contention.
An Antonelli victory in Austin would eliminate Verstappen, Leclerc and Norris from the title race, regardless of where they finish.
If he clinches the championship in Austin, Antonelli would become Formula 1's youngest-ever world champion, surpassing Sebastian Vettel, who won his first title at the age of 23 in 2010.
