Cristiano Ronaldo added another landmark to his glittering international career after scoring his first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout-stage goal during Portugal's dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Croatia in their Round of 32 clash at Toronto Stadium on Thursday. The 41-year-old converted a second-half penalty to end a drought that had stretched across eight previous World Cup knockout matches over 24 years, before Goncalo Ramos struck a stoppage-time winner to send Portugal into the last 16.
The goal also saw Ronaldo become the oldest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup knockout-stage history at 41 years and 147 days, eclipsing compatriot Pepe's previous record of 39 years and 283 days, set during Portugal's Round of 16 win over Switzerland at the 2022 World Cup. It took his tally to 11 World Cup goals across six tournaments, adding to a legacy that already saw him become the first men's player to score in six different editions of the competition earlier in the group stage.
Portugal had struggled to find a breakthrough after a cagey first half before Ivan Perisic stunned Roberto Martinez's side with the opening goal in the 53rd minute. Chasing the game, Portugal made a bold quadruple substitution in the 62nd minute in a bid to inject fresh energy into the contest.
Portugal's equaliser arrived just moments after the substitutions following a lengthy VAR review of a corner-kick incident. Renato Veiga was adjudged to have been dragged down inside the penalty area while attempting to get on the end of the delivery, prompting the referee to overturn his initial decision after nearly three minutes of review and award Portugal a penalty.
Ronaldo stepped up and calmly converted from the spot in the 68th minute, sending Dominik Livaković the wrong way to level the scores and finally open his FIFA World Cup knockout-stage account.
The contest also marked the first FIFA World Cup match to feature two outfield players aged over 40, with Ronaldo lining up against Croatia captain and former Real Madrid teammate Luka Modric.
Beyond his landmark goal, Ronaldo produced a disciplined all-round display, completing 21 of his 22 passes while helping Portugal retain possession in the final third, before making way for Goncalo Ramos in the 81st minute. The substitute went on to justify Roberto Martinez's decision by netting the stoppage-time winner.
Portugal will now face neighbours Spain in a blockbuster Round of 16 clash in Dallas on July 6 as Ronaldo looks to continue extending his remarkable World Cup legacy.
