Ayushman Bharat Yojana is a flagship scheme introduced by the Indian government. It was launched in conformity with the recommendations of the National Health Policy 2017 (UHC) in order to achieve the aim of Universal Health Coverage. This program was created with the intention of meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and their core value of 'leaving no one behind.'
It was launched by the Prime Minister of India on 23rd September 2018 and includes almost 50 crore Indian citizens under the program. This plan seeks to adopt novel approaches to completely revamp the primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare systems (encompassing promotion, prevention, and ambulatory care).
The Ayushman Bharat Yojana scheme comprises two key inter-related components, namely:
a) Health and Wellness Centres (HWCs)
The first part involves building 150,000 Health and Wellness Centers, which will bring medical treatment closer to people's homes. These facilities will offer Comprehensive Primary Health Care (CPHC), which includes free basic medications and diagnostic services and addresses non-communicable illnesses, maternity and child health care, and both.
b) Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM – JAY)
The second element of Ayushman Bharat is the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, also known as PM-JAY. It is a critical element required to accomplish Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 and Universal Health Coverage. It aims to provide medical and health protection coverage for low-income and disadvantaged households against financial risk brought on by serious medical emergencies. The cost of implementation is divided between the Central and State Governments.
A list of some critical diseases covered under the PM – JAY scheme is –
Skull base surgery
Prostate cancer
Antrior spine fixation
Coronary artery bypass grafting
