Cause Of Death

The actor was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 2023. He made a social media announcement in July 2023 with a post that read, "Well. I have some bad news to share. On 1st February I was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. At the minute it's only presenting in my legs. It started in my right leg last October, you may have seen me dandering about with a limp and brace on my right leg. At the moment my upper body is completely unaffected. Michael was praised for his dedication and passion as he continued to work and also took a major part in raising MND awareness.

On April 8, 2026, Michael's wife Naomi Sheehan took to Instagram to share the devastating news of Michael's passing.

She wrote, "Last night, Mick sadly passed away in the Northern Ireland Hospice. He was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease 1st February 2023. He was admitted 10 days ago and was cared for by the incredible team there. He passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends. Words can't describe how broken-hearted we are."

What is Motor Neurone Disease?

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) affects motor neurones, the nerves in the brain and spinal cord that coordinate with the muscles for motion. As the nerves are damaged, the brain can no longer send signals to the muscles, which leads to movement issues. It is a rare progressive condition that is not curable. While it shortens the life expectancy of the affected, with treatment, the symptoms can be controlled.

Talking about Michael's favorite quote, she said, "Mick loved this quote from Brendan Behan and this feels appropriate now: “The most important things to do in the world are to get something to eat, something to drink and somebody to love you.” So, don't overthink it. Eat. Drink. Love."
