Filmmaker Mira Nair has officially unveiled the first look and the cast of her long-awaited biographical drama Amri, based on the life of iconic painter Amrita Sher-Gil.
Actor Anjali Sivaraman will headline the film as Amrita Sher-Gil, the visionary artist who left a lasting impact on modern Indian art through her fearless and distinctive work.
Story Set Across Europe And India
The project marks one of Mira Nair's most ambitious films to date and traces Amrita Sher-Gil's journey across Europe and India during the early decades of the 20th century. Known for blending European artistic influences with Indian subjects and everyday life, Sher-Gil is widely regarded as a pioneer of modern Indian art.
Who Was Amrita Sher-Gil?
The film revisits the extraordinary yet short-lived life of Sher-Gil, who died at just 28 but left behind a body of work that transformed Indian modern art. Trained in Paris at the prestigious Académie des Beaux-Arts, she became one of its youngest students before developing a distinct artistic voice rooted in Indian identity and social realities.
Some of her most celebrated paintings include Two Women, The Bride's Toilet, Group of Three Girls, Girl in Blue, Sleeping Woman and Hill Women.
Full Cast And Characters
Apart from Anjali Sivaraman, who rose to prominence with Netflix's Class and later appeared in Bad Girl, the film will feature Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Jaideep Ahlawat in key roles.
The ensemble cast also includes Emily Watson as Amrita's mother, Marie-Antoinette Gottesman, while Jaideep Ahlawat will essay the role of her father, Umrao Singh Sher-Gil. Hungarian actor Krisztian Csakvari has been cast as Victor Egan, and Anjana Vasan will appear as Indira Sher-Gil. Jim Sarbh is also part of the film as Karl Khandalavala. Priyanka Chopra will not only act in the film as Madame Azurie but is also attached as an executive producer.
Mira Nair On Amrita Sher-Gil's Influence
Speaking about the project in a media statement, Mira Nair described Amrita Sher-Gil as one of the biggest inspirations behind her cinematic vision. In a statement, the filmmaker said the artist's use of colour, framing and portrayal of ordinary Indian lives deeply influenced her storytelling sensibilities over the decades.

Production Details
Amri is currently wrapping production across India and Hungary. Mira Nair has co-written the film with Clara Royer and is producing it alongside Samudrika Arora and Michael Nozik. Mirabai, Samscape and Papertown Productions back the film in collaboration with KNMA and Miramax.
