The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won West Bengal Assembly elections for the first time in history, bagging 206 of the 294 seats, bringing an end to Mamata Banerjee's 15-year-rule in the state.
The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) was reduced to 81 seats, compared to 215 in 2021. A decade ago, the BJP had won only three seats in Bengal.

In the previous election, the BJP secured 77 seats. Apart from multiple senior TMC leaders and ministers who lost their seats, Mamata Banerjee also faced a setback in Bhabanipur constituency, where BJP's Suvendu Adhikari won by over 15,000 votes.
Overall, the BJP secured a vote share of about 46% compared to 41% for the TMC. Many constituencies witnessed tightly fought battles.
According to data from the Election Commission website, the lowest victory margin in West Bengal was seen in Rajarhat New Town, where counting concluded on May 5. BJP's Piyush Kanodia won by just 316 votes, with TMC's Tapash Chatterjee coming a close second with an overall vote count of 106248.
Several other constituencies have also witnessed close contests, with margins below 1,000 votes. In Satgachhia constituency, BJP's Agniswar Naskar won against TMC's Somashree Betal by 401 votes.

Of the five seats with the lowest victory margins, BJP won four. In Kashipur-Belgachhia, Mandirbazar and Pandabeswar seats, the margin of victory was below 2,000 votes, the EC website showed.
