Weather Alert For April 28: IMD Issues Heatwave Warning In These States; Rainfall Likely In Delhi

Large parts of north India continued to reel under an intense heatwave on Tuesday, with several states recording exceptionally high temperatures and little relief from the sweltering conditions. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the situation is expected to persist over the next few days.

In the last 24 hours, the highest maximum temperature of 46.9°C was reported at Akola (Vidarbha) while Nagpur and other parts of Vidarbha also experienced severe heatwave conditions. In Rajasthan, Jaisalmer recorded a high of 46.4°C.

Haryana and Punjab also faced oppressive heat. Rohtak recorded a maximum temperature of 44.2°C, while Bathinda was the hottest place in Punjab at 43°C, according to the Meteorological Department.

Heatwave Forecast For Today, April 28

  • Heat wave conditions are very likely in some places of Vidarbha, West Rajasthan, Odisha, Gujarat State, Rayalaseema, Chhattisgarh and north Telangana April 28.
  • Hot & humid weather conditions are very likely to prevail in isolated pockets over Konkan, Kerala on April 28, coastal areas of Gujarat State, Tamil Nadu during April 28-29, and Odisha during April 28 to May 1.
  • Warm night conditions are very likely to prevail in isolated pockets over West Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh on April 28.

Rain Likely In Delhi

In Delhi, the weather department issued a yellow alert for heatwave-like conditions as the maximum temperature rose to 42.3°C. The national capital was also hit by a spell of dust storm on Monday evening. Tuesday signals a change in weather conditions for most northern states, IMD says. This comes as the city faces an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring to a maximum of 42.3 degrees Celsius.

"There is a cyclonic circulation over adjoining central Pakistan, northwest Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana. It is currently strong and moving towards north-east India. Parts of Rajasthan and Haryana may receive rainfall tonight, and the system is expected to reach Delhi on Tuesday and persist till April 30," Mahesh Palawat of Skymet said, as reported by PTI.

Thunderstorm, Winds In North 

Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are also likely at isolated places in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana. Isolated hailstorm activity is expected over Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, and over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Wednesday. Despite the expected rain and thunderstorm activity, heatwave conditions may persist, with temperatures likely to remain above normal in several areas.

The IMD has advised people to avoid taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms and to stay away from concrete walls, floors, water bodies and electrical conductors. Residents have also been advised to unplug electronic devices and remain alert in case weather conditions worsen.
