Water levels in the seven lakes of Mumbai, which supply water to the city, increased on Tuesday following heavy rain. These lakes are critical for Mumbai's drinking water supply and their replenishment is heavily influenced by the monsoon season.
The seven lakes are Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Vihar and Tulsi. These lakes are spread across Mumbai, Thane and Nashik districts, with a total capacity of useful content at 14.47 lakh million litres.
Overall, the seven lakes contained a combined capacity of 1,41,511 million litres of useful water content, making 9.78% of the total capacity of 14,47,363 million litres, as per the official data at 6 a.m. on Tuesday.
A day ago, the water level was reported at 8.60% on Monday and 8.69% on Sunday, raising concerns over the water levels.

AdvertisementIn the past 24 hours, the Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna and Tansa lakes recorded a combined useful water content of 85,227 million litres. With a total capacity of 6,94,582 million litres, the latest water levels mark 12.27% storage of total capacity. This marks an improvement from the previous day, when the combined level stood at 10.11%.
During this period, heavy rainfall in the city helped to improve the water levels in all seven major lakes. According to available data, Upper Vaitarna recorded 23 mm, Modak Sagar received 87 mm, Tansa got 62 mm and Middle Vaitarna registered 80 mm of rainfall. Meanwhile, Bhatsa Lake recorded 61 mm of rainfall, while Vihar received 101 mm, and Tulsi logged the highest with 162 mm of rainfall during the same period.
IMD Predicts More Rain
According to the IMD, Mumbai is expected to receive rainfall till June 22. The weather agency has predicted moderate rainfall for today and tomorrow. Further, "heavy" rainfall at isolated places is expected on June 19. This is expected to be followed by moderate rain again on June 20.
Meanwhile, the weather agency issued an orange alert for Mumbai on Monday as several areas experienced heavy rainfall, leading to widespread waterlogging and disruption of daily life. Between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., Colaba Fire Station recorded 50 mm of rainfall, while the Nariman Point Fire Station recorded 47 mm. During this period, 43 mm of rainfall was recorded in Mumbai Central, while Powai received the highest rainfall at 68 mm. Kurla and Mankhurd also witnessed significant rainfall, recording 62 mm and 56 mm, respectively.
