Modak Sagar, one of the seven major lakes of Mumbai, continues to be at full capacity, while others recorded a surge in water levels, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation data showed on Monday. Modak Sagar, which became the first lake to overflow in the ongoing monsoon season, can hold 1,28,925 million litres of water.
Besides Modak Sagar, Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Tansa, Vihar, Tulsi and Middle Vaitarna are other key reservoirs that serve as a lifeline for Mumbai. Middle Vaitarna is nearing full capacity too, currently holding 93% of its 1,93,530 million litres capacity.

According to the BMC data, at 6:00 a.m. on Monday, the combined water storage in the seven major lakes stood at 1,096,052 million litres, or 75.79% of total capacity. Last year, the water levels in these lakes remained at nearly 29% capacity during the same period.
AdvertisementThis year's early monsoon has significantly helped these lakes to get replenished sooner than expected. In the last 24 hours, all seven lakes received rainfall ranging from 11 mm to 50 mm, leading to a surge in their water levels.
With more rainfall predicted ahead, the level in these lakes is expected to surge further. India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall for Konkan, Goa and parts of Maharashtra on Monday. Moreover, light to moderate rainfall is likely to lash western Indian states over the next five days, the agency said in its morning bulletin. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for all coastal districts of Maharashtra, except Mumbai, for July 14.
