At least 89 people were killed on Thursday after a powerful storm accompanied by heavy rains caused widespread damage in various districts of Uttar Pradesh, officials told news agency PTI. The districts affected are Bhadohi, Fatehpur, Budaun, Sonbhadra, Siddhpur Kaitholi village, Tark Paroli village, Chandauli, and many others.
Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner Dr Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod on storm, rain battering the state killing 89 people, said, "As you are already aware, over the past 36 hours, several districts in the state have witnessed large-scale storms, strong winds, lightning, and thunder strikes, which have caused significant damage in many areas." He said they have been continuously monitoring the situation through the control room. The sub-divisional magistrates, tehsildars, other district officials and police were inspecting and carrying out relief work across all tehsils of the district, as reported by PTI.
"According to the information received so far from the districts, damage has been reported in 19 districts. Till now, reports of around 89 deaths have been received, while approximately 53 people have been reported injured. Information has also been received regarding the death of 114 animals. In addition, nearly 87 houses have either collapsed or suffered damage," said Yashod.
Taking cognisance of the loss of life, livestock and property caused by heavy rain, strong winds and lightning, Adityanath expressed condolences to the bereaved families and directed district magistrates and officials of other departments to reach the affected areas and ensure all possible assistance to victims, warning that negligence in relief work would not be tolerated.
Adityanath also instructed officials to remain on alert mode and directed the revenue and agriculture departments, along with insurance companies, to conduct surveys of the damage and submit reports to the government. He said compensation should be provided immediately after assessment of the losses.
