QS World University Rankings 2026 featured several new Indian entrants

India's higher education landscape has reached new heights in the QS World University Rankings 2026, featuring a record 54 institutions, the most ever, securing fourth place globally behind the US, UK, and China.

IIT Delhi tops the list at 123 worldwide (up 27 spots from rank 150 in 2025), excelling in academic reputation (67.9 out of 100) and citations per faculty. The rankings, assessing 1,501 universities via eight indicators like employability, sustainability, and international research networks, underscore India's five-fold growth since 2015 from having 11 universities.

IIT Bombay ranks at 129, a slight dip from 118, and is strong in employer reputation (96.7) and engineering innovation, while IIT Madras surges to 180 from 227, boosted by international research collaborations and faculty-student ratio. The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, enters the top 250 at 219, a minor decline from 211, dominating research citations and sustainability. IIT Kanpur completes the top five at 222, advancing up from 263, lauded for alumni outcomes and academic excellence. These IITs reflect India's STEM dominance, with 48% of ranked universities improving positions.

New entries from India in QS ranking 2026

The QS World University Rankings 2026 feature several new Indian entrants making their debut, including IIT Gandhinagar; Lovely Professional University (LPU); Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology; Ashoka University; Galgotias University; Shiv Nadar University; CHRIST (Deemed to be University) in Bengaluru; and Manav Rachna International Institute of Research and Studies (MRIIRS), reflecting India's expanding higher education footprint with a record 54 institutions ranked globally.

Indian University's increasing participation

QS highlights India's "rapid advancements", particularly in citations (eight universities in the global top 100, average 43.7 score) and computer science, having 44 entries from the Indian subcontinent. Challenges persist in internationalisation and employer alignment amid rising Asian competition from Seoul National University and Institut Polytechnique de Paris. Private institutions like Shoolini University ranking 503 and Chandigarh University ranking 575 also advanced.
