Panic Grips Kolkata After 5.5 Magnitude Earthquake Tremors; Videos, Photos Go Viral

Tremors were also reported from parts of Sikkim, including West Sikkim.

Strong tremors were felt in Kolkata and several districts of West Bengal after an earthquake of magnitude 5.5 struck Bangladesh on Friday.

The epicentre of the quake in Bangladesh's Satkhira district, around 100 km from Kolkata and barely 25 km from the bordering areas of Taki in North 24 Parganas district, news agency PTI reported.

People came running out of homes, offices and schools and gathered in open areas. No injuries or untoward incidents were reported as of now.

Videos and photos of the impact are doing rounds on social media. 

Union minister Sukanta Majumdar was reportedly addressing an event when the tremors started.News agency IANS posted the video of the incident. 

An ‘X' user shared how people were evacuated from a high rise building. The user wrote, “Felt the earthquake tremors too heavy and evacuated by climbing down the stairs from 18 to ground floor. Hope everyone in Kolkata is safe.”

Tremors were also reported from parts of Sikkim, including West Sikkim. Just a day earlier, Sikkim experienced four separate earthquakes, heightening fear and anxiety among residents. While no casualties were reported, damage to infrastructure was confirmed at Gangyap School and Gerethang School due to Thursday's seismic activity.

In another incident, an earthquake of magnitude 3.4 struck Changlang district in Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday at around 8:50 am, according to the National Centre for Seismology.
