Odisha Police Arrest 1,771 People, Seize Over 3,000 Kg Ganja In Special Drive

Odisha Police arrested 1,771 people in a statewide crackdown, seizing ganja, illegal firearms, and machinery.

Odisha Police arrested 1,771 people and seized more than 3,000 kg of ganja during a statewide enforcement drive targeting narcotics smuggling, illegal arms possession and organised crime.

The operation also led to the seizure of 20 illegal firearms and action against illegal mining networks across multiple districts, according to an official statement, that PTI quoted.

The special drive focused on executing pending non-bailable warrants, arresting absconding accused and disrupting drug smuggling routes. Police also intensified action against habitual offenders and anti-social elements as part of the operation.

During the raids, police recovered over 3,026 kg of ganja and 16.6 grams of brown sugar. Authorities registered 31 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and arrested 29 alleged drug peddlers.

Police also registered nine cases under the Arms Act, arrested 13 suspects and recovered 20 illegal firearms, including country-made weapons.

Mining Crackdown

The enforcement drive included action against illegal mining activities across the state. Police registered 136 cases and arrested 60 people in connection with illegal excavation and transportation of minor minerals, PTI reported.

Authorities seized 179 vehicles and heavy machines allegedly used in illegal mining operations.

The operation also resulted in legal action against 643 anti-social elements under the National Security Act and 126 habitual offenders under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.

The coordinated crackdown targeted illegal mining syndicates, narcotics trafficking and arms smuggling networks operating in the state, an official said, according to PTI.

Authorities said the drive forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen law enforcement and curb the spread of illegal drugs and weapons in Odisha.
