From the Himalayan foothills to the southern peninsula, India's weather landscape is rapidly changing. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a comprehensive forecast predicting heavy rainfall and thunderstorms for New Delhi, the eastern coast, and the northeast through early May.
'Yellow' alert is currently in place for Delhi, with intermittent rain and cloudy skies expected to persist through May 6.
Winds are predicted to reach speeds of 30–50 kmph, with some "thundersquall" areas seeing gusts up to 70 kmph.
Heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, is expected to impact the northeast, eastern coast, southern states, and parts of central India over the coming days, according to the IMD's latest advisory. Special focus is on Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and the Northeast (Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh).
Western Disturbance
A significant shift in atmospheric conditions is set to break the recent heatwave across North and Central India. According to the IMD, the activation of a potent Western Disturbance is now reaching the plains, ushering in a period of turbulent weather characterized by thunderstorms, gusty winds, and much-needed cooling.
Statewise forecast
Very heavy rain is forecast for Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, and West Bengal, while Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura should expect heavy falls. West Bengal and Sikkim may also face winds up to 50 kmph.
Residents in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha should prepare for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds as the weather system moves through the eastern plains.
Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry are likely to see heavy rainfall. While Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka will experience thunderstorms, much of these states, along with Tamil Nadu, will remain hot and humid.
Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected across Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, East Rajasthan, and Jammu and Kashmir. The IMD warns of rough seas and winds up to 65 kmph over the Bay of Bengal affecting the Odisha, West Bengal, and Andhra Pradesh coasts; fishermen are advised to stay ashore.
