Gujarat Local Body Election Result 2026 Live: BJP Takes Huge Lead; Congress Wins Surat Seat After Decade

Congress won Behrampura ward 35 in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, while BJP dominated overall. BJP swept all Bavla taluka panchayat seats unopposed and won panels in Isanpur ward 45 and Navrangpura. In Bavla, BJP took Bhayla, Shia, Gagad, and Roykabethak; Congress won Kesardi. 

In Ahmedabad, counting is taking place at centres including LD Engineering College and Gujarat College, with traffic restrictions imposed in surrounding areas from midnight to facilitate the process and ensure security.

Congress opened its account in Surat Municipal Corporation after over a decade, with Arshad Jariwala winning from Ward No. 12.

AAP opened its account with victories in Bagsara and Halwad, while the BJP consolidated its early advantage across several seats in south Gujarat.

Congress registered early gains in the Bharuch Municipality polls, winning Ward 1 and Ward 2. The party has so far bagged 8 of the 44 seats.

Early trends from Ahmedabad showed the BJP ahead in several wards, including Thaltej, Navrangpura, Asarwa and Bapunagar, as vote counting continued.

A 68-year-old woman died of cardiac arrest after casting her vote at a polling booth in Patan.

A 48-year-old gram panchayat peon on election duty collapsed and died in Anand district.

Amit Solanki, who worked as a peon at the Sansej gram panchayat office, suddenly fell unconscious at a polling booth in the same village, said Taluka Development Officer and Assistant Returning Officer of Petlad M V Solanki.

The elections on Sunday were held under revised norms for Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservations, which required extensive delimitation and ward restructuring in several districts.

• In March 2021, the BJP scored a landslide win in the local polls in Gujarat, winning 6,236 out of 8,470 seats across various municipalities and establishing a wide gap with the rival Congress.
• The BJP had then dominated all six municipal corporations, 81 municipalities, 32 district panchayats, and 231 taluka panchayats.

Nine newly-created municipal corporations, including Navsari, Gandhidham, Morbi, Vapi, Anand, Nadiad, Mehsana, Porbandar and Surendranagar, voted for the first time.

• The ruling BJP, the opposition Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are the key players. The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) contested multiple seats.
• In a first for AAP, the Kejriwal-led party contested around 5,000 seats in local polls.

• A voter turnout of 55.1% was recorded for all 15 municipal corporations, while the polling percentage for municipalities, district panchayats and taluka panchayats stood at 65.53%, 66.64%, and 67.26%, respectively, according to the Election Commission.
• The newly-formed Gandhidham Municipal Corporation in Kutch district recorded the lowest turnout at 46.03% while Vapi in Valsad district logged the highest turnout at 72.29%
• The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation logged a voting percentage of 51.81%
• Among rural bodies, the tribal-dominated Narmada district recorded the highest voting percentage of 84.49% while Porbandar district panchayat logged the lowest turnout at 50.80%
